Hotspots

Highlights during Amsterdam canal cruise

Amsterdam is full of historical gems, from beautiful bridges and churches to world-renowned museums. Are there certain hot spots you would like to see? Let the skipper know and often the route can be altered a bit.

The skinny bridge

When Amsterdam was prospering in the Golden Age, a monumental wide bridge (made of stone) was planned on this spot during the fourth city expansion of 1663. This would connect Kerkstraat (which had the function of a transit street) to the other bank of the Amstel River. However, the disaster year of 1672 threw a spanner in the works, causing a major economic setback. As a result, the demand for building land decreased sharply. The other side of the Amstel (Nieuwe Herengracht, Nieuwe Keizersgracht, Nieuwe Prinsengracht) remained virtually undeveloped for a long time. A bridge was therefore unnecessary. Later, when some construction did occur in the late 17th century, it was decided to still build a bridge, but much cheaper (made of wood instead of stone) and narrower (leaner). From this came the name “Skinny Bridge.” (Source: Wikipedia)

Prinsengracht

The Prinsengracht in Amsterdam is a canal, which runs parallel to the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam Center. The canal, named after the Prince of Orange, is the fourth of the four main canals belonging to the ring of canals.

Construction began in 1612, at the initiative of Mayor Frans Hendricksz. Oetgens, after a design by city carpenter Hendrick Jacobsz Staets and city surveyor Lucas Jansz Sinck.

The part between Leidsegracht and Amstel belongs to the 1658 explanation. The last expansion included the section east of the Amstel River. This section was named Nieuwe Prinsengracht.

Continuing the Prinsengracht, between the Brouwersgracht and the Westerdok, is the Korte Prinsengracht.

Amstel Hotel

The U-shaped building was commissioned by Samuel Sarphati and designed by Cornelis Outshoorn in 1863. The original main façade was planned on the boulevard, now called Sarphatistraat. Despite problems with financing, the hotel opened in the summer of 1867. Although the original building plans envisioned four wings, it remained at one.

The Amstel Hotel in 2012 is a five-star hotel with 55 rooms and 24 suites. There are also a bar, a brasserie, a restaurant, a gym and a swimming pool, which may also be used by outsiders.
